Yeah, the crazieness Simon manages to pump out of his machines was a bit too much for most of the people who turned up at the Paradiso, Amsterdam. But his performane had some very beautifull moments, with sounds you had never heard before. I had the impression he was trying out what worked and what not, on stage! But it was all miles away from the dancefloor!

I was surprised too by their stage qualities! They've just started with live-gigs and allthough this showed in the lack of build-up in the set, Mike Golding & Steve Rutterreally did a great job. They played some material from Time Tourist, but if I'm not mistaken they also did a fine & long version of Outerim, with fucked up snares and crazy knob-twidling efects. At last -the rather introveredt- crowd was dancing!!

Must correct you on this one. IMHO they put up something really special last night. Deep & mysterious, dark & abstract. This strange concert was one of the best electronic gigs I've heard (not seen, since Sean & Rob had ordered to turn down all the stage light!) in a long time. Their live set is miles away from the dancefloor, let alone that good old 4x4. I never heard so much asynchronisity but it all fitted perfectly in the long & dark drones this Mancunian duo dropped on this. Autechre clearly stands alone in the field of IDM. I seriously doubt if this is called IDM at all, they're so Industrial orientated. Especially on stage. In August Autechre returns to do a combined gig with musical Dadaists Zoviet France. That says it all really. On the whole, the evening in Paradiso was a bit strange. It took a long time for the crowd to get into the atmosphere and into the very left field DJ set by Chantal. Although it was a Warp promotional tour they had done very litle on decor, slides, video art and stuff. A pity really. Great T-shirts though, and I really like that funny cute Blech flyer! What I like even more is the tape the first 100 people to enter Paradiso got. I've got it, trainspotters: here's the tracklist of WARP MC46: Autechre - Carni Freeform - Mastik RAC - Quexos Freestyle B12 - Infosphere Mira Calix - Khala Haven't played it yet. Still recovering from last night ;-) So, who else was there? I know a whole bunch of the Lowlands mailinglist showed up. Opinions please! \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ The only thing to fear Rene Passet is snail mail: box 85453 fear 2508 CD Den Haag itself Holland \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/

The sound wasn't too good at his gig as well. His music was OK, but it lacked something for me. His gig wasn't as special as Autechre's or as dancable as B12's. Maybe i will like his records better. The Freeform track on the Eurowarp tape is quite good altough i listened just once to it. Speaking of the tape, who is Mira Calix?

Autechre was amazing, especially their second track. They only did three tracks, but they were very long. With their minimal structures and polyrhythms they build an incredible tension. Their music is beautiful but very cold at the same time. I've seen Autechre a couple of times before and they they're only getting better. It would be interesting if they released a live album some day.

I don't know what to think of the DJing. It was certainly great to hear all those classics like Cybotron's Clear and Rhythm is Rhythm's Nude Photo, but you can get every almost every audience dancing with tracks like that. The mixing wasn't very good as well. But i should't complain really...

Nothing actually.

It's almost as good as Peel Seamus' tape :)

Meeting so many people of the list was half the fun of the night for me. Strangely enough there weren't too many people at the party, but almost 50% of the audience seemed to be subscribed to Lowlands! :) Mazzel, Hans ____ _ _ ___ ___ __ ____ Hans Veneman (_ _)( \/ )___ / _ \/ _ \ ___ /__\ ( _ \ hansv@tip.nl )( \ /(___)\_ /\_ /(___)/(__)\ )(_) ) tv99ad@xs4all.nl (__) \/ (_/ (_/ (__)(__)(____/ +31(0)320 235266 http://www.xs4all.nl/~tv99ad --------------------------------->

My NLG 0,02: Freeform was indeed beautiful in sounds, very Free of form and not very danceable. I have the say I respect the guys guts. No DATs involved btw Helen, for the technology trainspotters: Atari, seck mixer, sampler (FZ1 I think) and antoher sampler. Some small fx. B12 was the bomb. No pretentions, just beautiful funky techno. Danced my butt off ! Equip: JV 1080 Akai S 2000/2800/3000XL (one of those), Atari, 2 mackie 1604s, K1r, 909, some fx. One of the tracks had a very long intro due to Cubase going into deep space (one of the guys was going "No ! No! NO! F**k that ! No No NO! :)). He cured it by stop very briefly and starting again.. It was good fun to see them looking down at their equipment preparing a break and then looking up and smiling at the hall when they introduced a little joke break. Autechre: Beautiful. Definitley. Couldn't get into the rythms though. I second Passetti's comments. Equip: Very minimal: EPS 16 plus, MMT 8, R8, 2 fx, mackie mixer ! The stage was dark but the lights in the hall should have been cut as well... No sense in some scans waving to this music. About DJ Chantal: I liked it.. No mixing involved so she couldn't be said to have bad mixing qualities ! Maybe she relied a bit too much on old school tracks. RAC 's DJ set was good: crwative quality techno all the way. Apparently a lot more (LOW) ppl were there than I talked to. At the next lowlands.event maybe we can all wear some identifier ? Like a specially desgined (LOW) party hat ? ;) Nice meeting Peel Seamus for the "first" time IRL. Got we must have gone to the same parties a lot in the old days man ! The deal is on, my e64 is waiting Parting comments: How about that typical Paradiso style: music lovers watching the show, press and industry in the lobby :) -- "No corporation will ever pay a creator enough to sue them successfully." -Dave Sim, creator of Cerebus Allert Aalders - Big Time Concepts - allert@knoware.nl - KoX

Allert Aalders was at the Paradiso too: an> Freeform was indeed beautiful in sounds, very Free of form an> and not very danceable. I have the say I respect the guys an> guts. No DATs involved btw Helen, I agree the individual sounds were beautiful. The problem was that they somehow did not connect ... I tried, believe me. It was, after all, mainly Freeform that I came to see that night. I didn't expect to dance, I expected to hear what I hear in his recorded material: melody, intricate patterns, occasional solid beats, interrupted by free and bleepy sounds that send me off into another dimension. 'elastic speakers' and 'prowl' have me entranced ... that's my disappoinment. ehhhrmmm ... does this make any sense? (ofcourse it does, Helen) b.t.w. did you have to tell the whole world that I apparently haven't the foggiest about all those electronic gadgets? Now I'll never be able to show my face anywhere again :-( I don't know how to live with the disgrace ... an> Apparently a lot more (LOW) ppl were there than I talked to. an> At the next lowlands.event maybe we can all wear some an> identifier ?
